Weekly Update: Nov 21-25

What a great week it has been! We had a guest in to learn more about how Chromebooks can help us become better writers and a presentation on Bullying. We had a practice lockdown today which all students took very seriously.

As this was Bullying Awareness Week, I challenged students to fill in post-its about kindness they did or saw around the school:

Math: We have been reviewing geometric shapes and working on our protractor skills!

Science: Matter tests came home yesterday to be signed. We are starting FORCES ACTING ON STRUCTURES today!

Talk to ya next week!

Weekly Update: November 14-18

What a week it has been. Above average temperatures & a short week for the students!

The Remembrance Day ceremony last week was so touching.

Language: We have been reading about Genies this week. Ask your child if they meet the Genie criteria! Next Monday and Tuesday we will be presenting our newspaper articles to the class. I will be assessing their ORAL presentation, rather than the written part. So PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Math: We will be finishing up our Patterning Unit this week and moving on to Geometry. There will not be an official test for this unit. Ask your child to explain what a pattern rule is.

Science: We will be having our Matter TEST on Wednesday next week. Students will be encouraged to bring home their Science duotangs to study from. Our next unit will be Forces Acting on Structures where we will be doing a lot of hands on/building activities.

Weekly Update: November 7-11

Happy Tuesday All!

We had a guest in this morning to teach our class some cool features to use on the Chromebooks. She was SO impressed with how well we sang O'Canada!

The Grade 5s are in charge of the Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday. Here was the message sent out on Mr. Slack's update:

Remembrance Day Ceremony

On Friday we will be having a Remembrance Day ceremony and liturgy here at the school. It will begin at 10:30AM and parents are more than welcome to attend.
If your child is in Guides or Beaver Scouts, they are more than welcome to wear their uniforms on this day to take part in the honour guard.
Students will wear a poppy to the ceremony that Gr. 6 students will be delivering on Friday morning. If you would like to send in a donation for the poppy and the legion.
Language: We have started to explore newspapers and students will be picking an article to analyse and present to the class. Students will be responsible for creating a "speech" and practising it on their own. Your child can show you the assignment in their Google Drive.
Math: We have started our Number Patterning Unit. It is a short unit. Here are some related websites to review with your child:

Science: We will be having our Unit Test soon. We will be doing review in class starting next week and your child will be encouraged to take their duotang home to study. Today's lesson's question: what does solubility mean? Is salt soluble in water?
I am looking forward to meeting with you tomorrow at the parent-teacher interviews.

November 1st - Clay Sculptures

Religion: I wanted to share an activity that we did in Religion today. The class listened to a story with their eyes closed in hopes of visualizing a scene. They then created a design and made their design in clay. I was so impressed with the vibrant imaginations and creative creations. See below!
