Weekly Update: June 12-16


It is the last full week of school! I can't believe it!

Today (Monday) we had scientists in the classroom. Check out the SeeSaw app to see pictures and videos of our experiments.

Math:
We have been working on Area & Perimeter. Finding dimensions and designing cities!

Language:
Get ready to be persuaded...

Science:
We reviewed what it means to be Eco Friendly. This week we will be finishing off our unit by designing (and hopefully building) Eco Friendly house models.

Weekly Update: May 29 - June 2

Language:
Last week we were talking about how celebrities gain power. This week we created our own "celebrity" photographs and had to write 3-5 sentences explaining how they demonstrate power in their photo.
We also looked at Video Game trailers.
We are now working on creating a pitch for our Reality T.V show! We hope to create trailers next week.


Math:
We started working with graphing and coordinates. We did some practice work then created our own schools using coordinate systems.
We also worked on a Transformation package.

Math: 
We finished up our probability unit this week and touched on algebra. We had a fun Friday playing THE AMAZING RACE - ALGEBRA EDITION. We learnt that math can be fun!

Language: 
We have been working on our Media: Superhero unit this week. We have been discussing how media influences our opinions and different ways celebrities are portrayed in the media.

Weekly Update: May 15-18


General Reminders:
*Hot outside = hot inside. Encourage your child to wear shorts, t-shirts, and deodorant is always appreciated!!
*Tomorrow is a P.D day and Monday is a holiday - ENJOY YOUR LONG WEEKEND!
*Math and Science tests went home this week.

Language: This week we have been working on our Media Superheroes unit. We made connections to REAL LIFE superheroes in our community. Students were to find an article about someone in the community who can inspire other people to do good deeds, answer the 5 Ws and we will be posting them on our hallway bulletin board.

Math: We have been talking about probability. We have used coins and dice to test our experimental probability and then we used our connections to test out theoretical probability.

Weekly Update May 8-12


I cannot believe we are almost into June!

General Updates:

Language: We started a unit on Media Superheroes last week. We will be looking at the commercialization of superheroes and we will be expressing our opinions and analyzing different aspects of media.  

Math: We finished our Fractions unit last week and we started our Probability unit. We will be doing a lot of hands on activities to find the fractional probability of different events occurring.

Science: We had our Human Body unit test last week. We will be finishing our presentations on a disease/disorder related to the human body and moving onto our last unit: Energy Conservation.

Weekly update: May 1 - May 5


Happy May!

General updates:
*Tomorrow is Jump Rope 4 Heart (raindate is Monday)
*Math Test: Wednesday May 10th
*Science Test: Wednesday May 10th
*Library: Tuesday May 9th

Language: Today we started presenting our long awaited Book Talks. Check out Seesaw for some videos.
We have been working hard on writing compound sentences. Click on the Conjunctions for extra practice!

Math: We have been working hard on fractions. We even learnt to play Fraction Golf! Our unit test will be next Wednesday.

Science: We have been working hard on our Human Body Projects. Each student chose a disease that affected one of the body systems. We will be presenting them starting today. Our unit test will be next Wednesday and then we will begin our final unit: Conservation of Energy.

We participated in Cleaning the Capital today. See below for a picture.
We also have OZOBOTS in the classroom. Students can test their ability to code.

General Announcements:

  • Tomorrow is our last fundraiser for OK Clean water. Students can buy gum for a small donation.
  • Next week is Education Week. An invitation with the week's itinerary was sent home today.
  • Our class is responsible to bring in croissants and jam for the open house on Thursday May 4th. Please send in your item by Wednesday May 3rd. Your help is very much appreciated.
  • Jump Rope 4 Heart is next Friday, May 5th. Envelopes for donations were sent home last Thursday.

Weekly Update: April 18 - 21


General Announcements:
* There was NO homework this week
*Tuesday Mass at St. George Parish at 1:30
*There have been a lot of assignments sent home recently for signatures...

Language: We finished our business letters and worked hard towards completing our Fractured Fairy Tales. We will be sharing those with the class next week. We will also be completing our Novel Studies and presenting them late next week.

Math: This week we learned about mixed fractions and improper fractions. We know how to go from an improper fraction to a mixed fraction and vice versa. We can also use pictures to show a fraction visually.

Try: 25 ÷ 4

Science: Today we finished up our Organ Applications. Ask your son or daughter to tell you about one of the organs of the body.

Weekly Update: April 10 - 13

Language: We have been using our creativity to solve a Fairy Tale mystery. We then had to compose a business letter pretending to be a character from the mystery. We are now working on creating our own Fractured Fairy Tales. I can't wait to hear them all.


Math: We hit the ground running with our Fractions unit. Today, as a fun activity, we used Skittles to practice what we know. See the pictures below and take a look on SEESAW for more. 


Science: We have learnt SO much. Ask your child to explain what a NEURON is and to show you with their arm the different parts!

Weekly Update: March 27-31




Spring is here...well kind of.


I hope everyone had a restful March Break. So nice to hear about all the cool places everyone went!

Last week was WELLNESS WEEK. Students participated in Drumming, Yoga, an Art activity and listened to a presentation by Chris Nihmey. See below for some pictures.

Language:We are beginning to wrap up our Novel Study Unit. We will be presenting our books through a Book Talk in the next few weeks.

This week we read the poem "What Ted Said" and we learned what the word loquacious means. We are creating comic strip stories to demonstrate our understanding for sequencing.

Next we will be working on solving a fairy tale mystery and completing our own fractured fairy tales.

Math: We are almost done with our measurement unit. Students know TONS about elapsed time and they are working in pairs to complete their Temperature Projects. For their Temperature Projects they are to compare data from a Canadian city to a city of their choice worldwide.

Science: We have covered the Muscoloskeletal system, Digestive system, and Circulatory System. Next is the Respiratory system. We have being doing a lot of review games and I am so pleased with how much everyone is retaining.

Weekly Update: March 6-10


Happy March Break !!! 

We had a great week leading up to March Break. A few birthdays, lots of excitement, and some students even got to start their vacation early!!

General Update:
*Homework is due March 20th. Any time your child reads they are to answer a question from the list.
*Novel Study Book - students who have not finished their book need to catch-up with reading over the break
*Seesaw- anyone who has not signed up please do so. The information is in your child's homework folder. I post a lot of photos and videos to keep you up to date on what YOUR child is doing.
*Tests: ALL TESTS ARE SENT HOME TO BE SIGNED.

Language: 
We are working towards completing and presenting our novel study book at our very first Book Talk. We have also discussed the main idea of a variety of poems and the elements of poetry.

Math;
We finished our decimal unit on Monday and I was quite pleased with the marks. We have moved onto Elapsed time (the difference between one time and another). Quiz your child on how much time has passed throughout March Break.

February 20-24 Update


General Announcements:

The LOVE assembly was an absolute HIT! I am so proud of the grade 5s.

Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday. The Chamois family have graciously offered to make our class pancakes (safe for all to eat). Thank you SO much!

Language Arts:
We have been working on The Sword in the Stone play. Students will be presenting their adaptations next week.

Math: The tentative date for our Decimal math test is next Friday, March 3rd. Students will be receiving "Decimal of the Day" sheets to practice. They can recreate the sheet to try their knowledge with different decimals.

Science:
We have been learning about the Skeletal System this week. Ask your child how the Skeletal System is connected to the Circulatory System.

The Arts: We will be DANCING from now on....

Weekly Update: February 13-17


I am a touch late on my post! I hope everyone had a good long weekend.

General Announcements:
*Homework due every Monday
*Book Fair Thursday February 23rd- send $ to buy books
*Love assembly presented by Mrs. Scharfe's grade 5s & Mrs. Campbell's grade 2 class on Wednesday afternoon
*Skating will be cancelled for tomorrow due to the Spring-like weather !

Thank you to the Chamois Family for the delicious cupcakes for the class on Valentine's day.

Report cards: I hope your child's report card found you well. Please send back the form requesting a telephone or in person interview if needed.

Love assembly: We have been working with Mrs. Campbell's Grade 2 class to present the theme of LOVE to the school. We have an amazing video and skits- it has been so amazing seeing the grade 5 students being leaders in the school and spreading the love!

Math: We now know SO much about decimals. We learned how to add decimals last week and will be working on subtracting decimals this week.

Language:Students are still working away on their independent novel studies. Everyone is working at their own pace. Some are reading, others answering questions, but everyone is engaged. We will also be working on presenting different versions of The Sword in the Stone.

Science: We had a sneak peek into our Human Body unit last week where students calculated how much skin they've shed since they were born. Their homework on Thursday was to find out how much skin had been shed by one of their parents. I was very disappointed in the number of students who did not do their very small homework assignment :(

Metacognition: get your students thinking about their thinking!  Light Bulbs and Laughter blog

I am very excited to begin using SEESAW in my classroom. This is a way that your child can take videos and pictures of their work and YOU can see exactly what they are doing in class. Keep an eye out for the note home on how to access coming to you Monday!

Language: We have started our novel study. I am so thrilled with how excited everyone is to read their books!! There is a lot of work to be done to work towards our Book Talk. 

Math: We know how to round decimals, write decimals, multiply decimals by 10, 100 and 1000 OH MY!! Next week we will tackle Adding and Subtracting Decimals.

Science: We will finally complete our Unit Test today. We start our exciting Human Body Unit next week.

Weekly Update: January 30-February 3

It was a really tough week for me as we had to put my dog, Meika, to rest on Wednesday. The students were so supportive and knowing they were praying for me and Meika warmed my heart.

General Reminders:

Language Arts:
We are finishing Kensuke's Kingdom today and we will be putting our sequencing skills to the test!! Next week students will be starting their own guided novel study and I am hoping they continue to ask all the questions we did throughout Kensuke's Kingdom.

Math:
We are well into our Decimals unit now. We know the place value of decimal points up to the thousandths, we understand equivalent decimals (0.5 = 0.50) and we can compare decimals to decide which is greater than or less than.

Science: 
Presentations for their Natural Disasters Project today and Monday.  Our unit test is on WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 8th. 
Our next unit: The Human Body.

We will be skating:Wednesday Feb 8, Feb 15, and Feb 22. Please bring skates and a helmet!

Math: We finally had our Data Management Test on Wednesday. The tests were sent home on Thursday to be signed and returned to me. Our next unit will be DECIMALS!!

Language: We continue to read our novel on Kensuke's Kingdom - definitely a must read!! We also focused on grammar and sequencing this week.

**SOME STUDENTS STILL NEED TO BRING IN THEIR NOVEL FOR THE NOVEL STUDY!

Science: We have been working on our Natural Disasters group project. We will be presenting on Wednesday.

Art: In a cross curricular attempt we created bridge art using water colours and permanent markers. They turned out really nice!

Weekly Update: January 16-20



General Reminders:

* MATH TEST CHANGED TO TUESDAY


Language: We have been reading Kensuke's Kingdom. Making inferences about what will happen next and learning many new words to add to our vocabulary.
We have also been focusing on commas and compound sentences, including identifying the subject and predicate in a sentence.

**Students are to bring a novel that is grade appropriate and one they haven't read yet to class for our novel study starting soon!

Math: 
We are wrapping up our Data Management unit. Take a look at the pictures from our Graphing Projects.


Science : 
We have been experimenting with different materials to build different types of bridges. Next week will be focusing on Natural Disasters and how their forces affect structures. Below are some pictures of Beam and Arch Bridges:

Welcome back & Happy New Year!


I hope everyone had a great holiday.
Our first week back flew by and we are right back into our routines.

General Reminders:

Language: 
*Biography rubrics coming home this evening to be signed
We started reading the novel: Kensuke's Kingdom. 
We also will be focusing on grammar for the next few weeks.

Math: 
Today students began working on their Group Graphing Assignment. They are working in pairs to create a question and a variety of graphs. They will be presenting their data to the class. 
Due date: Wednesday January 18th. 

Graphing Test will be Monday January 23rd. 

Science: 
We are continuing our Forces unit with a focus on bridges. Ask your child what 5 bridges we are focusing on.
